Chevrolet Fuel Economy
Following on from the last post Chevrolet Models 3, we’ll now take a long hard look at some of the Chevrolet fuel economy measures that it has been promoting of late.
Chevrolet has been focusing on offering fuel efficiency with its choice of automobiles in an attempt to cut back on fuel wastage and pollution. Good sentiments indeed from a world leader in the automobile industry. While still far behind Europe in providing realistic fuel economy, they are at least taking steps in the right direction. So what has Chevrolet got for us?
Gasoline Economy: Well, first up comes their smaller, more fuel efficient cars that are capable of producing up to 30 mpg on the highway. That might sound really good, but when you compare those figures to a huge number of European cars that regularly produce in excess of 50 mpg on the open road, then you’ll see that we have got a long way to go yet!
Active Fuel Management™: This innovative technology works by shifting from eight cylinders to four and back again in your car’s engine. So in situations where the extra power is not needed, for instance cruising down the highway on level roads, the Active Fuel Management™ technology deactivates half of the cylinders in the engine with seamless precision. When the load demands on the engine increase, like when you accelerate or travel uphill, all eight cylinders are reactivated to provide full power. As far as the driver is concerned, you’ll probably not even notice as it all happens seamlessly and automatically.
E85 Ethanol: Now we’re talking true fuel economy! E85 Ethanol vehicles can run on either gasoline or E85, which is a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, or even a combination of both. The advantages of running your vehicle on E85 ethanol is that it’s a cleaner fuel. It burns mostly renewable fuel sources which are produced mainly from U.S. grown biomaterial. This includes corn or other grain products. By burning E85 ethanol in your car, you are helping to reduce greenhouse gases and at the same time can enhance the nation’s economy and energy independence. The availability of this special fuel will vary by state, but is becoming more popular over time.
We’ll revisit the Chevrolet Chicago feature on fuel economy at a later date when more information is available.
