Chevrolet Engines
Filed Under Chevrolet Maintenance | 2 Comments
Following on from the last post Chevrolet History, which looked at the history of the Chevrolet Motor Company and General Motors, we’ll take a brief look at some facts about the powerhouse behind the Chevrolet automobiles, the Chevrolet engines.
To begin, the basic Chevrolet small-block V-8 engine design has remained in continuous production to this day, since its debut in 1955. In the world auto industry, this is longer than any other mass-produced vehicle engine design. However, current versions of this engine share few if any parts that are interchangeable directly with the original engine.
The descendants of that basic small-block OHV V-8 engine design platform that are in production today have been extensively modified with many advances. These include an aluminum block and heads, innovative electronic engine management and sequential port fuel injection for greater power production and economy.
The popular small block Chevrolet V-8 engine is used in the current production model Impala sedans for 2008, several light and medium duty Chevrolet trucks, as well as the current generation Corvette sports car.
These engines are built in displacements from 5.3 to 7 liters, depending on the vehicle type where they’re installed. They produce power outputs ranging from 303 to over 500 horsepower (370 kW) as installed at the factory.
This popular engine format will be used as a performance option in next year’s revival of the Chevrolet Camaro.
Over the years, the same engine design has been heavily used in GM products produced and sold under the Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Opel (Germany) and Holden (Australia) subsidiaries.
More recently, a 6-liter, 400 horsepower (300 kW) adaptation of the small-block V-8 engine designed initially for the C-5 and C-6 Corvettes are being installed in the factory-built, high performance versions of the Cadillac CTS sedan, to be known as the CTS-V.
